Hmmm, with the passage of time, as the independence day draws closer, yet another film need a mention is Gandhi my father by Feroz Abbas Khan. I cannot agree more when I heard about the film for the first time, it seemed another regular bollywood film which tries in vain to focus on history. So, why I chose this one to blog about? Well I must say when I saw the trailers for this, I was really impressed. This film differs from the rest because it shows something different from the usual flicks. It delves into an entirely unexplored and unforayed corner of “Mahatma” Gandhi. This flick talks about the wound he carried within his heart, this movie talks about his son Hiralal Gandhi. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was burdened because he brought a change to the whole nation as a whole but could not change his son. Hiralal married Gulab, roamed in the streets like beggar, converted to Islam as a rebel, then reconverted to Hinduism in penitence. Hiralal has his dreams and ambitions, but wasn’t able to fulfill them. This movie tells us that even Mahatma was only human not above or below that, because he also struggled within himself personally, socially, and politically. From the trailers, the movie seems to intricately woven in backdrop of racial discrimination in South Africa, and more importantly freedom struggle in India.
Feroz Abbas Khan, has been acclaimed internationally for his plays, and his plays regularly feature to jam packed audience. His plays have been staged at the Lincoln Center, New York, the Memorial Hall at Stanford University, the Universal Studios amphitheatre in Los Angeles, at the Waterman’s Art Center in London and the Durban Playhouse in South Africa. His play Mahatma V/S Gandhi was acclaimed as the finest English play to emerge from India in the long time by New York Times. With this flick he shows a promising career in motion pictures. Although the star cast may not be as impressive but their skills compensate more than anything. He casts Darshan Jariwala as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Akshaye Khanna as Hiralal Gandhi, Bhoomika Chawla as Gulab Gandhi and Shefali Shah as Kasturba Gandhi.
Enough of publicity for the flick, in the end I would just like to write the Bapu’s lines Iswar Allah tera naam, sabko sanmati de bhagwaan, Ragupati Raghav Raja Ram, Patit Pawan Sita Ram.
